Elderly share painful tales try to create awareness

NEW DELHI: Hundreds of elderly people came together at Jantar Mantar on the eve of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, sharing their shocking, painful and humiliating tales. (Rahesha Sehgal & Peyasha Sehgal) "The very people whom we admired and adored all our lives threw us out of the house...I miss my son and his children every day. "Some day my children will be in my position and they would understand the pain of being mistreated, misbehaved and abused," said one of them. But he has never tried to get in touch or is ashamed of his deeds," said Hemlata (76).India is home to 10 crore senior citizens, many of whom are being abused and even abandoned by their families.They are mostly mistreated for the want of property, finds a survey conducted by Helpage India , an NGO working with senior citizens.
