NEW DELHI: Hundreds of elderly people came together at Jantar Mantar on the eve of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, sharing their shocking, painful and humiliating tales."The very people whom we admired and adored all our lives threw us out of the house...I miss my son and his children every day. But he has never tried to get in touch or is ashamed of his deeds," said Hemlata (76).India is home to 10 crore senior citizens, many of whom are being abused and even abandoned by their families.They are mostly mistreated for the want of property, finds a survey conducted by Helpage India , an NGO working with senior citizens."Whenever property or bank balance is involved, the children behave in a decent and a loving manner until everything is willed to them," said Hoshiyar Singh (72), president of Super Senior Citizen Welfare Forum.A 72-year-old widow who lives in Sukhdham Oldage Home in Delhi has filed an FIR against her only son after being threatened to hand over her only property in Panipat worth Rs 20 lakh.Though old age homes take care of many, the sadness and trauma of being betrayed by their own prevails."Some day my children will be in my position and they would understand the pain of being mistreated, misbehaved and abused," said one of them.(Rahesha Sehgal & Peyasha Sehgal)
