5mm of rain is enough to trigger chaos on roads

New Delhi: Monsoon is yet to arrive in Delhi, yet " excessive rain earlier this month caused waterlogging and traffic chaos in different parts of the capital. "Last year saw waterlogging in several lowlying areas. The city received 72mm of rainfall between June 1 and June 22, an excess of 151%. Palam also received heavy rainfall, which led to traffic snarls for hours. Delhi is likely to see more such days of heavy rainfall in the next few weeks," said a Met official.

New Delhi: Monsoon is yet to arrive in Delhi, yet " excessive rain earlier this month caused waterlogging and traffic chaos in different parts of the capital. The city received 72mm of rainfall between June 1 and June 22, an excess of 151%. On average, Delhi receives 28.7mm of rain in June, Met officials said.Safdarjung recorded 26.4mm of rainfall from 8.30am on June 19 to 8.30am on June 20, which is the highest rainfall in a single day in June since 2013. The last time Delhi received so much showers was on June 19, 2013 when 58.5mm of rainfall was recorded over 24 hours.In fact, between June 15 and June 21, Delhi saw 66.9mm of rainfall after pre-monsoon showers lashed the capital due to a western disturbance, throwing life out of gear in the morning peak hours. Waterlogging and traffic snarls were reported in major areas like Rohini, ITO, Pitampura, Wazirabad, Kashmere Gate, Ashram, Azadpur, Moolchand, Dhaula Kuan and Chirag Dilli.According to the Met officials, while there is no fixed quantity of rainfall, which could lead to waterlogging, as little as 5mm is enough to cause disruption in areas where proper desilting may not have taken place."Rainfall between 5mm and 30mm in a single day can lead to waterlogging and we saw multiple days in June when it was more than 10mm at Safdarjung and over 80mm in other parts of the capital over a 24-hour period, which can be categorised as heavy rain. Delhi is likely to see more such days of heavy rainfall in the next few weeks," said a Met official.'Heavy' rainfall occurs when showers exceed 64.5mm in a day. Pitampura received 81mm till 8.30am on June 20, while the Ridge weather station received 72mm of rainfall during the same period on June 20. Officials say preparations need to be made in advance for low-lying areas, underpasses and places like Palam, which are prone to waterlogging. "Last year saw waterlogging in several lowlying areas. Palam also received heavy rainfall, which led to traffic snarls for hours. Work needs to be carried out in these areas first to ensure that rainwater does not accumulate on roads ," added the official.June and August 2016 had received 54% and 41% less rainfall than the average, while July recorded 32% more rainfall than the average.
