NEW DELHI: Some of the councilors of North and South corporations and officials had scary moments on Monday afternoon when two monkeys sneaked inside the civic centre's A block, the administrative building of the two corporations. The monkeys roamed around in different floors of the building creating a pandemonium in the building where the office of mayors and deputy mayors of South and North Corporations are located. No one was bitten or hurt by the monkeys."I came out when I heard strange noise outside my office in the afternoon. I was scared to see a monkey standing close to my office. It scared away a person who tried to click a photograph. In the chaos one monkey tried to enter inside my office on second floor. I slammed the door from inside. It was really scary moment," said Mukesh Kumar Goel leader of Congress councillors in North Corporation.Delhi has been struggling to counter the monkey menace for a long time. In 2007 the then deputy mayor SS Bajwa died a day after being attacked by monkey. Trying to fend off the monkeys Bajwa had fallen from the terrace of his house and sustained grievous injuries in his head. The job to counter monkey menace in the capital rests with the corporations. Monkeys roaming around the various floors of the civic bodies' administrative building scaring its councillors exposed that the corporations have miserably failed to counter the menace.A staff said that nobody saw from where the monkeys entered the building. Mukesh Goyal said the monkeys sneaked inside from the main entrance and used the non-moving escalator to go to first floor while North Corporation mayor Preeti Agrawal said the monkeys sneaked inside the building from the broken glass of a third floor window. There was pandemonium in the building when the staff saw the monkeys. Some of them clicked the photos while they joined the chaos. Unable to find an easy exit, the monkeys became aggressive and tried to attack the staff who gathered around them. Probably out of fear they tried to enter inside different offices located on second, third and first floor. There was no organized chase by the corporations' monkey catchers. It was like a wild goose chase which lasted for over half an hour."One monkey brushed by me when I was walking from one office to another. I had never felt so scared," said Abhishek Dutt, a councillor. "It seems that the corporations have not taken any lesson from the death of deputy mayor. The incident has exposed the working of the veterinary department which is supposed to control stray animals in the capital," said Goel. Finally armed with canes the security guards managed to chase away the monkeys. "I have instructed the officials to ensure that this incident is not repeated," said mayor Agrawal.
