He was with his friend Chander Mohan and Mohit at Chuna Mandi in the victim’s car when the incident happened. “We were all drinking at a bar in Paharganj after which we drove to Chuna Mandi. We were talking when Mr. Sharma received a call. He told us he was going to meet his friend Ashu and would be back,” said Mr. Mohan. When Mr. Sharma went to meet them, Ashu and three associates allegedly abused him and started beating him with bricks. Later, they hit Mr. Mohan too, he claimed. “They also used stones and bricks to beat us. They didn’t stop even when he fell down,” said Mr. Mohan. Broken car windows He also alleged that the four accused then threw stones at Mr. Sharma’s car and broke its windows. “They pulled me out and started beating me too. Meanwhile, our friend Mohit fled out of fear,” he said. When a crowd started gathering, the four fled the spot leaving the two wounded. “We were taken to a nearby hospital by passersby and someone also called the police,” he said. The athlete is undergoing treatment at BL Kapoor Hospital and is out of danger, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M.N. Randhawa. “The motive for the crime is not yet known because the victim is unfit for statement,” he added. The police have registered a case against Ashu, who has several criminal cases against him, under Sections 308 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and 34 (common intention).
