Female students at Delhi University's Hindu College were left bewildered after finding a "sexist" welcome poster, that read "Hindu me Maalaur Maal dono milta hai", during their freshers'party being organised at the campus last week. The matter comes amid a raging controversy over the discrimination against girls at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The poster, having a cutout of a famous cartoon character Minnie Mouse, came into the light when some of the agitated freshers circulated it on social networking sites. Calling it a "shameless"way of "objectifying women", Ritika Sharma, a first-year BA student said, "It was really shocking to see such a sexist poster on the campus which is considered as a centre for intellectual and feminist debates." Another fresher too made her feelings known."We did not expect such a misogynist welcome by our seniors. Also, the college authority should have taken care of it. How can they allow students using such sexist statements anywhere at the campus?" The Hindu College's union members, who had organised the party, called it an "administrative lapse" on their part. "This is an issue of administrative lapse on the part of the organisers, who should have paid attention to it in good time and got the poster removed. It will be an endeavour for the parliament to stay vigilant in this regard in the future," the Union said in a statement. "We unanimously condemns the usage of such shamelessly gendered and misogynist phrases on campus or anywhere else," the statement added. Students at the college, however claimed that such phrases are being regularly used on their campus. "Unfortunately, its not a new invention and this phrase has been used by male students at the campus for decades. They have become so deeply entrenched that students hardly realise the gendered nuances of them," a third-year English (H) student said. Meanwhile, when contacted, Hindu College principal Anju Shrivastava said that she was not aware of any such poster. "I have not been informed of any such poster being used during the freshers' party at the campus as college was closed for a mid-term break soon after it. The use of such language is unacceptable and we will definitely look into the issue," she said while speaking to DNA.
