CHANDIGARH: In a development that exposes Haryana governments commitment towards quality education in schools, the education department could get the affiliation of only six of its senior secondary schools with the Central Board of School Education (CBSE) in the last two years. According to sources, of the total 149 CBSE affiliated government schools, only four got affiliated in the year 2021-22, and rest two got affiliated by August 18 this year. Moreover, even the number of overall government schools has declined over the period of last six years. As per data, number of government schools (CBSE and HBSE affiliated) in the state have been reduced to 14,225 from 14,619, since 2019-20. According to information, the schools which got affiliated with CBSE were only the ones shortlisted under PM Shree category. "142chools got affiliation in the year 2021-22. This include 139 Government Senior Secondary Schools and three Mewat Model Schools," sources added. On the other hand, the number of private schools getting affiliation with CBSE is consistently increasing since 2019-20.All this came to light in response to a question raised by Congress MLA from Mullana, Varun Choudhary. Choudhary had requested the government to provide details of CBSE-affiliated government schools as well as private schools in comparison with the schools affiliated to Haryana Board of School Education Education had been rather a jumla for this government. Right to education is a fundamental right as well. In the absence of CBSE affiliated schools in government sectors, students are forced to join private schools. I doubt as if there had been any kind of increase in the HBSE affiliated government schools since 2019-20 as compared to CBSE affiliated schools. This clearly shows the intentions of the state government, he said."We had been raising this issue of quality education in schools in the past and we shall raise this during this winter session as well. I dont know where the education system is heading, as the number of government schools have decreased in the past five years," added Choudhary. While in case of private schools, there were 1,169 CBSE schools in 2019-20, which have gone up to 1,507 in 2023-24. Similarly, there had been consistent growth in HBSE affiliated private schools in this period. In 2019-20, there were 7,706 private HBSE schools, which were largely budget schools, and now there are 9,055 such institutes, When contacted, officials of education department confirmed the data of CBSE-affiliated schools. Referring to slower pace of affiliation in the past two sessions, officials reasoned the technical formalities on the end of state education department as well as CBSE as the reason. Those affiliated were done as pilot project. Now, based on the success, we shall have more CBSE schools. Otherwise, curriculum of HBSE is equally good as CBSE and this is evident from the success of various programmes for meritorious students started by department, said a senior official of education department.
