Green efforts leave industry in the red

LUDHIANA: The Haryana State Pollution Control Board's order to close all polluting factories in Gurgaon and surrounding areas till November 14, in the wake of National Green Tribunal 's ban on emission-causing industrial activities in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), is taking a toll on Punjab's industry as well. The Punjab industries supply chemicals and tractor parts to the NCR units, besides four-wheeler and two-wheeler components to auto giants, like Maruti Suzuki , Hero and Honda, among others.Thick smog engulfing the Capital and surrounding areas made NGT issue the directions.Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU), one of the leading business associations of Punjab, said the state's industry has suffered a loss of at least Rs 500 crore since November 11, with NCR units putting their orders on hold."The inclement conditions have hit the production of NCR industries and many of the manufacturing plants have closed down. "A long-term action plan and strict implementation of the measures are the need of the hour," Ahuja added.Auto Parts Manufacturers' Association president GS Kahlon said, "Transportation services have also taken a hit due to smog. The governments of Punjab and neighbouring states should find an immediate solution to this problem."Manufacturers, meanwhile, said that they were still in the process of assessing the exact loss.
