Snatchers go on a spree, target 3 women in 34 hrs

Gurgaon: Three snatching incidents within 34 hours have rocked the New Colony area. In all three cases, men on bikes targeted elderly or middle-aged women walking on the road.Police have filed FIRs but are yet to name the miscreants or arrest them. The victims and their families have raised questions about the safety of women and elderly, as well as policing.Everything happened in a fraction of a second.I did not see or hear those men coming up. They snatched the chain from my neck, leaving me shocked. I would have tried to chase them if I was younger, but all I could do was scream for help, 60-year-old Sudhesh Verma said.Verma was on a morning walk outside her home near Jyoti Park around 7am on Friday when two masked men on a black Pulsar overtook her and snatched her gold chain worth Rs 60,000. Verma, a cancer survivor, said she never missed a chance to witness the sunrise during her walks, but little did she anticipate what happened on Friday. They pulled at the chain hurting me, she said.The victims son told TOI that neighbours heard Verma screaming and came running to inform them about the incident. I am grateful my mother was not harmed or harassed by the snatchers. Anything could have happened. The citys not safe for senior citizens, particularly women, he said.Verma filed a police complaint at the New Colony police station on Saturday. A CCTV camera has recorded the incident, said police.The footage showed the snatchers first scoped the area, waiting for the right moment to attack my mother. They also didnt have a proper number plate on their bike, said the son.The second case is from near Jyoti Park, too. At 6am on Saturday, two masked men on a black Pulsar bike snatched a gold chain from Saroj Bala Kumari, a resident of Sector 12.I was out on a morning walk with my dog. On my way back home, two masked men snatched my chain before fleeing, Kumari said, adding, Could the citizens of Gurgaon ever hope to rid themselves of such incidents? The third incident happened at 5.30pm on Saturday. A 45-year-old woman who works as a government school teacher in Delhi was exiting Geeta Bhawan Temple in the New Colony area when a man on a bike snatched her phone worth Rs 25,000. She was on call.He first slapped me and then snatched the phone. Before I could understand anything, he had disappeared. An auto driver and a biker tried to chase him, but he escaped, said the woman. My phone had all my data. The school attendance system is digitised now, and I cant access it. All this has been very stressful, she added.The woman also claimed police dealing with her case have had a casual attitude. A single cop arrived to investigate my case. We gave him the CCTV footage, but he has not contacted us after that," she added.Inspector Avatar Singh from New Colony police station said, We will ensure arrests of the accused soon. However, I recently transferred to this area, so I cant comment furtherPolice have filed FIRs under IPC sections 379A (snatching) and 34 (common intentions).
