Safai staffers ‘stop waste collection, trigger scuffle’

GURGAON: A scuffle broke out between MCG officials and sanitation workers who are on the civic body rolls at Sadar Bazar on Thursday morning after the latter tried to overturn tractor trolleys in which garbage was collected. MCG started a sanitation drive at 5am during which waste was collected from Sadar Bazar. However, the sanitation workers reached the spot and tried to overturn tractor trolleys.MCG officials said three sanitation workers, including a woman, were detained and later released. The collection drive came after a recent meeting convened by deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav and MCG commissioner PC Meena with the officials in which the officers were directed to lift garbage and sweep roads to ensure cleanliness of the city. The officers were told to initiate night sweeping in the areas which are crowded during the day.Some sanitation workers disrupted our work at Sadar Bazar around 8am, when our workers cleaned the entire market and collected garbage in tractor trolleys. The workers were threatening to overturn the tractor trolleys. However, we managed to stop them. Police was also present on the spot. We registered a complaint against them and three of them were detained. We have also identified around 12 workers, who tried to disrupt our work, and they will be served termination notices, said MCG joint commissioner (Swachh Bharat Mission) Naresh Kumar. The scuffle between our workers and officials on Thursday led to the detention of three workers, who were released after we staged a protest. We have now decided to extend our strike till November 12, said Naresh Malkat, state secretary of Nagar Palika Karamchari Sangh.
