GURGAON: App-based cab aggregator Uber has written to the Delhi lieutenant governor and the transport department, seeking a rethink of the decision to ban non-DL-licensed cabs in the capital when odd-even is enforced next week. The move, Uber has cautioned, will lead to a mobility lockdown for citizens of Delhi-NCR, who would be left in the lurch if they need to access critical infrastructure like the airport, railway stations and even major hospitals.Track the pollution level in your cityThe aggregator further said banning cabs would be impractical and hard to execute and sought time to engage in a discussion.Uber has around 70,000 cabs plying across NCR cities. A source said over 60% are registered outside Delhi.Ubers cabs run on either electricity or CNG, which leads to negligible carbon emissions, the aggregator said. An indiscriminate restriction on CNG vehicles which run on clean fuel will force people to move to petrol or diesel vehicles… We urge the government to take an all-encompassing view based on scientific evidence while also keeping in mind the larger humanitarian crisis, read the letter, which was sent on Thursday.A spokesperson for the aggregator said, We sent the letters both to the Delhi transport commissioner and the LG hoping that we can come to a mutual agreement. Most of our cabs are registered in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan. They are operating full-time in NCR cities. Banning their entry would make commuting a hassle. The Delhi government on Wednesday announced a ban on the entry of app-based cabs not registered in the capital from next week.We are trying to arrange a meeting with the transport commissioner. Putting a ban on cabs is impractical because it will lead to a commuting crisis. We hope to be able to come to a consensus, another cab aggregator told TOI.Commuters are in a fix after the order. My husband and I work in Delhi and live in Gurgaon. Both of us have BS-4 diesel cars with an even registration number. We cant drive them now due to GRAP-4 curbs. Both of us have no option but to rely on cabs. Living in Gurgaon, it isnt easy to find DL-licensed cabs. Now, we have no cars that we can drive, no cabs, no direct metro connectivity, and no option of working from home, Aditi Jaiswal, a Sector 81A resident, said.We also published the following articles recentlyRestrictions on cabs likely to spell transport chaos across Delhi-NCRThe Delhi governments plan to restrict app-based cabs registered in other states from entering the capital during the odd-even rule will disrupt the transportation system and make commuting between Delhi and neighboring cities more difficult. This restriction will decrease the number of available cabs, leading to higher fares and longer wait times. It will also impact intercity travel and airport rides. Residents and cab aggregators are concerned about the negative consequences of this decision and suggest implementing a more comprehensive solution to mitigate air pollution.Taking cue from SC, Delhi may bar NCR cabs during odd-evenThe Delhi government is considering restricting the entry of cabs registered in other states during the upcoming odd-even scheme from November 13-20. The restrictions could either involve allowing only odd or even numbered cars to enter the city alternatively, or barring these cabs altogether. This move could impact public transport in the National Capital Region (NCR), where people often work in one city and live in another. The government is considering the suggestion following an observation by the Supreme Court. Electric vehicles will be exempted from the restrictions and allowed to ply on all days.Cab driver held for teens kidnapA school cab driver in New Delhi was arrested for kidnapping a 13-year-old girl on her way to school. The driver, Vicky Singh, allegedly forced the girl into his car and attempted to flee. However, he was apprehended by the police. A case has been registered under the Pocso act, and the victim is undergoing medical examination and counseling. The investigation is ongoing.
