Canal breach fixed, but city faces water shortage

  • | Saturday | 11th November, 2023

Gurgaon: Parts of the city are still reeling under a water crisis, three days after a breach was detected in the Gurgaon Water Supply (GWS) canal that supplies water to the Basai treatment plant. According to a GMDA official, soil erosion near Chandu Budhera village led to the breach on Tuesday morning. The metropolitan authority has been rationing supply as there is a shortfall of 20% in raw water from the canal due to the breach.Officials are now hoping supply will be normalised by Saturday.Several areas in the city, including Palam Vihar, sectors 21, 22, 22B, 23 and 23A, Sushant Lok and DLF 1, 2 and 3, have complained about inadequate water supply for the last three days.GMDA officials said since there was no adequate supply of raw water to the Basai plant, they diverted treated water from the Chandu Budhera one to ensure that water reaches maximum areas in the city. While the irrigation department repaired the breach by Tuesday night, it takes time for compaction of embankment, which has resulted in less supply of raw water. There was inadequate supply on Tuesday and Wednesday. We have storage capacity of one and a half days, which we have exhausted. Since there was a shortfall in the raw water supply, we have diverted the water from Chandu Budhera plant so people get some water. We have already asked the residents to use water judiciously and are hoping things get normal by Saturday, an official said. The GWS canal feeds around 95 to 115 cusecs of raw water to GMDAs Basai water treatment plant. At present, GMDA is supplying 300 million litres per day (MLD) from the Chandu Budhera plant, and another 270 MLD from the Basai plant. We havent got water from GMDA since Tuesday. The scarcity has dampened the festive spirit. This is the second time this month that we are facing this issue. The infrastructure needs a total overhaul and upgrade according to the current water demand. Its pathetic that we are struggling for basic amenities at such a time. We are now planning a mass protest, said Dhruv Bansal, spokesperson of DLF Qutub Enclave RWA.In Sushant Lok 2 too, residents are struggling to carry out basic chores due to lack of water supply. For the past two, GMDA hasnt supplied any water and our borewells are also not working. Now, we dont have a single drop of water left. How can there be continual issues with the supply line and pump motors every other week? questioned Vinita Sinha, president of the RWA of A and A1 blocks of the colony.
