200 were challaned daily in Oct for wrong-side driving

Gurgaon: The fine for wrong-side driving was raised to over ten times the usual last year, but little has deterred motorists from breaking the traffic rule.Police data showed that 176 drivers were issued penalties for wrong-side driving every day in the city this October. In all, 5,481 challans were imposed by the Gurgaon traffic police, both manually and through cameras, for flouting the norm. Other than wrong side driving, DCP (traffic) Virender Vij said on Saturday that most of the challans were issued for driving without helmets (16,183) and illegal parking (7,979) for the month. Rs 2 crore was collected in penalties, Vij said.A total of 1,02,627 challans were issued in the police drive in October. Nineteen people were challaned for underage driving, 1,531 for driving without seatbelts, 1,175 for changing lanes, 629 for drinking and driving, 250 for speeding, 233 for jumping red lights and 124 for using mobile phone while driving, he added.Until August last year, city police would issue a fine of Rs 500 for wrong-side driving under the Motor Vehicles Act. They then increased the penalty for the violation to Rs 5,500 by adding an additional charge of Rs 5,000 for dangerous driving. The aim, they had said, was to discourage people from having to pay a steep fine just to save a few kilometres of distance in their commute.A total of 40,315 challans were issued in 2022 for wrong-side driving. On average, around 400 people die in road accidents in Gurgaon in a year. The MCD has cleaned the market temporarily, but will not continue unless a formal agreement is made. The court has also called on local traders to assist in developing the area. The court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the redevelopment, as various measures have already been taken.
