More burn injury cases this Diwali than last 2 years

Gurgaon: Hospitals in the city recorded 16 cases of burn injuries on Sunday night. Every year, the city sees a spike in the number of burn injuries on Diwali. Last Diwali, the hospitals treated seven patients with burn injuries, while 12 cases were reported in 2021.While most patients this year required only first-aid, one patient was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for further treatment.The Sector 10 Civil Hospital treated 12 burn patients, including eight adults and four children, while the Sohna government hospital and the Pataudi Civil Hospital treated two cases each.Speaking about this years cases, chief medical officer Dr Virender Yadav said, One patient had more than 35% burn injuries and was sent to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. While five had minor injuries, so they did not require admission. They visited the emergency wards after 10pm and went home after treatment. Some others were admitted in the burn wards for a day to ensure they are recovering.Doctors also noted that more patients with obstructive pulmonary disease (OPD) reported chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory distress on Monday than usual. The number of patients with respiratory distress and allergies may increase further, they said.We are getting patients with breathing difficulties in the emergency wards, primarily due to a rise in pollutants. These cases will increase with the dip in temperature, said Dr Yadav.According to doctors, residents need to look for early symptoms such as burning sensation, watering and redness of the eyes, nasal congestion, running nose, frequent sneezing, headache, breathlessness, cough, chest heaviness, etc. The severity of symptoms will depend on the level of pollution, exposure and personal health status.Doctors warned that higher the concentration of ambient pollutants, higher the risk of heart attacks, strokes and COPD.After the first day following Diwali, my initial session involved attending to 10-12 patients in the first half of the day. Doctors recommend putting burn injuries under running water or dipping them in ice cold or room-temperature water.Diwali: Tamil Nadu sets aside 750 beds to treat people with burn injuriesIn preparation for Diwali, Tamil Nadu has allocated 750 beds in government hospitals to treat burn-related injuries. The facilities will be staffed by medical professionals and equipped with medications and ventilators. Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital in Chennai will also have a special ward with 20 beds and ICU beds specifically for burn patients. Additionally, the state is addressing the rise in dengue cases, with over 500 patients currently hospitalized and an expectation of reaching 7,000-7,500 cases by year-end. The government is conducting camps to identify and treat dengue early and prevent complications.Burn wards & 24X7 special care: Hospitals in Gurgaon on alert ahead of DiwaliThe health department in Gurgaon has instructed hospitals and primary health centres to be on high alert during the festive season and prioritize treatment for patients with burn injuries. To facilitate this, three burn wards have been set up in government hospitals, with additional beds reserved in other healthcare centres. Ambulances and doctors will also be on standby to provide immediate attention to patients experiencing respiratory issues, which are common during Diwali due to the effects of firecracker smoke.
