Gurgaon: MCG has dropped its proposed multilevel car parking project near the Sadar Bazar post office due to unavailability of land at the site. It had earlier planned three multilevel car parks in the busy market — one near the post office, another at Kaman Sarai and the third at Sohna Chowk — to decongest the area.The projects were announced in 2019 but work on the Kaman Sarai car park could not begin due to encroachment at the site.Now, a fresh estimate for the project will now be prepared on the basis of the land available.Meanwhile, the Sohna Chowk parking facility is under construction and will be ready by January 2024, MCG officials said.MCG commissioner PC Meena on Thursday chaired a meeting in which he reviewed the key development projects of the corporation. In the meeting, officials informed him that the cost of land earmarked for the car park near the post office was too exorbitant to buy from another government department. So, it was decided that the project would be dropped.Work on multilevel car parking facilities should be expedited to decongest the crowded market. A fresh estimate of the car park at Kaman Sarai will be made as per the availability of land that is free of encroachment. Civil work on the parking lot at Sohna Chowk will be completed by January next year, the MCG chief said.The Sohna Chowk facility will have six floors with a capacity to accommodate 206 cars and 190 two-wheelers. It will also have shops, which will also be a source of income for the civic body. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 54 crore.At the time of its announcement in September 2019, the estimated cost of the car park at Kaman Sarai was Rs 101.3 crore. The car park near the Sadar Bazar post office which has now been dropped, was estimated to cost the corporation Rs 44.6 crore.It was initially planned that the parking facilities at Sadar Bazar, Kaman Sarai and Sohna Chowk will have 10 floors each, including three basements. It was initially planned that the parking at Kaman Sarai would also have a multiplex, sports court, and retail and food court at the fifth floor. Moreover, it was also decided that the parking facilities would utilise an intelligent parking management guidance system, which would indicate each vacant floor or available parking slots for the convenience of motorists. A display system was also planned at each floor showcasing this information.
