GURGAON: Traffic police will soon launch lane enforcement on the internal roads of the city to reduce the number of road accidents as well as streamline traffic movement.Around 40% of fatal accidents take place on internal roads. As a pilot project, lane driving will be implemented on two internal roads. The initiative will gradually be expanded to cover other roads, cops said.At present, lane driving is strictly enforced only for commercial vehicles on expresswaysin the city.Police issue challans for violation of this rule to commercial vehicles, but not to private ones. Now, on the two selected road stretches —Subhash Chowk to Millenium City Centre Metro station and IFFCO Chowk to Ardee City road — lane driving will be applicable for all vehicles, including private vehicles.GMDA has prepared a proposal in this regard and sent it to traffic police for approval. According to officials from the metropolitan authority, they will paint lane markings on these roads and install signboards to inform commuters of lane driving. Besides, traffic marshals and road safety officers will initially educate the public about lane driving before starting the issuance of challans.The habit of not following lane driving also causes traffic congestion. Most of the internal roads of the city have three lanes, but during peak hours, as many as five different lines of vehicles can be seen, with commuters jumping from one lane to another. This obstructs the flow of traffic and slows down vehicular movement, leading to jams.DCP (traffic) Virender Vij said lane driving is very important to reduce the number of accidents. We are going to ensure lane markings on roads with GMDA and educate commuters about lane driving. Challans will be issued for the violation, the DCP said.Between January and November (till November 2 0) this year, a total of 396 people died in road accidents in the city, while 800 suffered injuries in 933 cases of accidents.Traffic police have also written to all road construction agencies, including NHAI, PWD, GMDA and HSIIDC, to ensure lane marking on roads under their jurisdiction. At present, there are no such markings on many roads and highways.Following lane driving is also expected to reduce the number of fatal accidents. Every year, more than 5,000 people die in road accidents in Haryana on highways because vehicles, commercial in particular, do not follow lane driving. In the city, between 2017 and 2022, more than 2,200 people have died in road accidents, a majority on expressways and highways.According to police, around 1.6 lakh challans were issued across the state for violation of lane driving in 2022, of which more than 18,000 challans were issued in Gurgaon. Between January and June this year, around 9,800 challans have been issued in the city for lane change.Traffic police have issued directions to the transporters that commercial vehicles must be driven on the second-most left lanes of four-lane highways, or on the middle lane of three-lane highways.
