Govt to start awareness campaign on free ration for migrant workers

Gurgaon: The city has around 10 lakh migrant workers of whom only 16,000 families are availing the benefit of free ration under one country one ration card scheme. To increase the number of beneficiaries, the government departments are going to conduct awareness programmes and educate migrant workers about the scheme and how they can avail its benefits.Deputy commissioner Nishant Yadav said around 10 lakh migrant workers from different states are in Gurgaon.They have their ration cards made in their native states. After registering on theHaryana government portal, they can use the same card to avail the benefit of subsidised ration in the city too. To make migrant workers aware about the scheme, different departments will carry out an awareness programme. By availing the benefits of the programme, they can get ration from anywhere despite frequent changes in their location for work, said Yadav.Gurgaon has 221 ration depots and eligible migrant workers can receive ration from there. The migrant workers will have to link their ration card with Aadhaar card and get a Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP).Monica Singh, director of the central food supply and public distribution system, said the scheme was launched in August 2019. There are 5.71 crore ration depots across the country and around 80 crore people are benefiting from it. The one nation one ration card system is an important citizen centric reform.
