Neighbour, staff try to withdraw ₹23L from a/c of hotelier, booked

GURGAON: Two people were booked on Wednesday for allegedly stealing a blank cheque from the home of a hotelier, police said. The cheque was stolen years ago, but an FIR in the case was only registered this week, according to police.The accused were identified as Manish Kumar Jain and Tilak R Anand, the hoteliers accountant and neighbour respectively.Complainant Kamal Bir Singh, chairman of Best Western Country Club Resort in Manesar, told police that the accused stole a blank cheque from his home office back in 2015 when he was out of the country. I have an office in the basement of my house where my accountant Jain would usually work. He also had direct access to my funds, Singh said.He further said that he was alerted of the theft on March 31 when the accused allegedly attempted to steal Rs 23 lakh from his account using the blank cheque and his forged signature. Singh was alerted by his bank that the cheque had bounced and he realised what had happened, he said.An initial complaint was registered at the Economic Offences Wing on July 7, police officials said. After five months of preliminary investigation, an FIR was registered against the two accused under sections 380 (theft in dwelling house), 384 (extortion) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC at the Sector 40 police station on Wednesday. We will take the necessary actions as per the law, said inspector Manoj Verma, SHO of Sector 40 police station.Singh also alleged that Jain had previously stolen around Rs 1.8 crore from him similarly using unauthorised cheques in 2019-2020.
