Picked up, but dumped again: Why these schools can’t escape the stink of garbage

GURGAON: MCG teams picked up piles of waste lying outside two government schools in Kanhai and Jacobpura on Thursday after a TOI report. Garbage, however, was dumped at these places again on Friday as they are waste collection points — one designated by MCG, the other illegal. Officials said they could not do anything about it because garbage was bound to be dumped at these places. While the site in front of the Government Senior Secondary School in Kanhai is a secondary waste collection point designated by MCG, the area near the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Jacobpura is an illegal dump yard where locals throw waste despite repeated warnings, officials said.Garbage was lifted on Thursday, but it was dumped again by locals on Friday. This is happening because these two spots are waste collection points. We will now ensure that garbage is lifted regularly so that schoolchildren dont face any problems, said Rishi Malik, MCG senior sanitary inspector. On Thursday, TOI reported that students of these two schools have begun wearing masks again in a bid to avoid the nausea-inducing stench from the garbage, an overpowering one that has made getting through the school hours tough for all. Its very difficult for us to study here because of the intolerable stench all day, said Rinku Upadhyay, a class 7 student of the Kanhai school.Garbage is dumped herel every day. We just want MCG to ensure that it is lifted and dumping stops, since our students and staff face a lot of inconvenience, said Sushil Kumar Kanwa, principal of the Jacobpura school.Asked about what MCG will do to ensure children dont face such difficulties, commissioner PC Meena said: We will look for an alternative secondary waste collection point in Kanhai since the designated point is in front of a school. Till we get a site, we will ensure timely lifting so thattrash doesnt accumulate and become a health hazard.Talking about the Jacobpura dump yard, MCG officials said clearing waste is challenging there since earthmovers and large vehicles cant enter the areas narrow and congested lanes. The area is so congested that vehicles cant move through these lanes. I will station a trolley so that waste is thrown in it and is not spread across the street. MCG is setting up special teams that will penalise those found dumping waste illegally, said Ambika Prasad Sharma, expert (sanitation), MCG.
