One more dead as Assam floods worsen

Charaideo remained the worst affected. GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the state worsened after a fresh spell of rain lashed several parts of the state in the last 24 hours. Total 122 persons were evacuated by the state fire and emergency services and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). A report issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), said the total number of people affected in the current wave of floods went up to 67,976 on Friday from 50,334 on Thursday.With one more death reported from the Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district in upper Assam in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 32. A total of 10 revenue circles in six flood-hit districts-Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi-are still struggling to remain afloat as the threat of rain looms large over the next couple of days.

The Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD on Friday stated that rain, accompanied by thunder shower, is likely to occur at most places over Arunachal Pradesh , Assam and Meghalaya and at many places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the next 24 hours.The number of flood-affected people has gone up to 35,429 in Charaideo from 22,429 on Thursday, while flood-prone Lakhimpur district continued to reel from flood fury as road connectivity remained disrupted in several parts of the district bordering Arunachal Pradesh.Though the overall flood situation improved marginally in the Barak Valley districts, a total of 690.40 hectare of crop area remained affected across Lakhimpur, Jorhar and Charaideo.The IMD has warned that heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur in isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya on Saturday, while heavy rain is very likely to occur over Arunachal Pradesh in next 24 hours.
