Agriculture course to be taught in 100 AHSEC schools soon

"We are very hopeful of introducing agriculture as a course in about 100 schools affiliated to AHSEC from this year. GUWAHATI: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) will introduce agriculture in the curriculum of Class XI from this year. Besides, having a kitchen garden, rain water harvesting are also going to be mandatory in the schools affiliated to AHSEC. The board feels agriculture offers vast possibilities of livelihood support.Taking to the media on the sidelines of a meeting with state agriculture minister, Atul Bora, AHSEC chairman Dayananda Borgohain said the state education board has planned to introduce the course in about 100 schools of the state in the first phase. "The kitchen gardens will work like laboratories for students, who are keen to take up agriculture as a means of livelihood.

The Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has been asked to frame the syllabus so that the students after passing their Class XII exam can get admission in the agricultural university easily," said Borgohain.He said though agriculture has been there as an elective subject in a few schools in Class IX and X, little emphasis has been given to popularize the subject which offers high employment opportunities and development. Besides, having a kitchen garden, rain water harvesting are also going to be mandatory in the schools affiliated to AHSEC. The board has also planned to introduce handloom at the higher secondary level (Class XI and XII).AHSEC secretary Kamal Jyoti Gogoi told TOI that simultaneously, the education board is going to implement a policy under which every higher secondary schools will have to create a kitchen garden in schools. "The kitchen gardens will work like laboratories for students, who are keen to take up agriculture as a means of livelihood. Science teachers will be engaged to look after the kitchen gardens," said Gogoi. In terms of gross state domestic product (GSDP), the contribution of the agriculture sector towards the state's economy has shown a growing trend from 2014-15. As per estimates, the annual growth rate in the crop sector at current prices for 2016-17 is estimated at 12.2% against 10.2% in 2015-16.
