Floods hit 3 more Assam districts, slump in Meghalaya tourism

Altogether, 82 villages under 12 revenue circles in seven districts remain inundated. Dhemaji has the highest number of flooded villages (29), followed by Lakhimpur.In Chirang, Kokrajhar and Barpeta, flood-affected people said the situation has worsened after excess water from Bhutan inundated downstream villages. Many rivers that originate in Bhutan flow through the area.Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said Brahmaputra at Nematighat in Jorhat, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, Puthimari in Kamrup, Beki in Barpeta and Sankosh in Dhubri were flowing above danger level on Thursday. "Her slippers were found beside a stream," a police source said.Tourism has also taken a hit in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills since Sunday, with heavy rains continuing to lash the state. "There are relatively few visitors who are coming here to stay overnight, although we expect tourism to pick up once the rains get moderate," said the owner of a lodge at Mawlynnong, a popular tourist destination."
