Waters recede in Assam, but 87,000 still hit in Golaghat

However, 116 villages are still under water and 7,085 hectares of crop area remains affected as on Monday, said the ASDMA report. Till Sunday, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Golaghat and Sivasagar were in the grip of the second wave of deluge.As the flood situation has improved, no fresh death due to floods was reported from any part of the state in the last 24 hours.

GUWAHATI: Even as floodwaters have receded in the state, the situation is still grim in upper Assam's Golaghat district where more than 87,000 people are still reeling from floods as on Monday.From about 1.04 lakh affected people reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Sunday, the number of people hit by the second wave of floods has come down to 87,300 on Monday. The number of affected districts, too, reduced from five to one with Golaghat being the lone district. Till Sunday, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Darrang, Golaghat and Sivasagar were in the grip of the second wave of deluge.As the flood situation has improved, no fresh death due to floods was reported from any part of the state in the last 24 hours. However, 116 villages are still under water and 7,085 hectares of crop area remains affected as on Monday, said the ASDMA report. Altogether six revenue circles remain affected in the district as reported by ASDMA.The sudden release of water from Neepco's Doyang hydel project in Wokha district of neighbouring Nagaland has wreaked havoc in Golaghat where thousands of people have been rendered homeless due to unprecedented floods. At present, the Brahmaputra, Dhansiri and Jia Bharali are flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat (Jorhat), Numaligarh (Golaghat) and NT Road Crossing (Sonitpur) respectively.
