A special team has been camping in the area to dart the tigress since last week.After the mishap of the veterinarian fracturing his leg in course of the pursuit, the forest department and veterinarian team of Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) on Monday called off the operation for the time being."Till September 12, we will not carry out the operation to dart and trap the tigress. During this time we will work on a different strategy and rope in more veterinarians so that the pursuit can be launched from multiple directions simultaneously. We are in touch with experts for devising the strategy," Dhansiri wildlife divisional forest officer Madhurya Kumar Sarma said.WTI's head veterinarian, Bhaskar Choudhury, who led the team to dart the tigress, said veterinarian Shamsul Ali sustained a fracture on his leg while trying to climb down from a tree-top house at a site in Borobazar on Sunday. Sarma said prolonged sleepless nights led to the mishap.Last Tuesday, the WTI team and the forest department launched their 11th attempt to dart the tigress, which has strayed out of Orang National Park , about 150 km from here. Since November last year, the tigress has been living in the area, preying on livestock in Borobazar, 15 km from the park, thus creating fear among villagers. At least 44 cows, goats and pigs have been killed by the tigress.The tigress has managed to give the forest department the slip in all attempts made to capture her since November, with even baits having been unsuccessfully used to lure her."She is giving us a real chase. I don't how long we will be in her pursuit," Sarma said.On Tuesday night, the team missed the tigress by a whisker, when she came almost 200 metres near them. The tigress left the spot in no time after she somehow sensed the presence of the team, which was then readying to dart her.About 15 sq km area of grassland on the banks of Dhansiri river, which flows through Borobazar, has become home to the tigress since it strayed out of the park.
