AGP toughens stand on citizenship bill

"The regional party in June received support from Shiv Sena in opposing the controversial bill after an AGP delegation met Shiva Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai. At the last NEDA meeting here, too, we made our stand loud and clear before Amit Shah. We have said the same thing to the chief minister now," Bora said.Bora added, "It would be wise for state BJP to tell its national leadership about our opposition to the bill to avoid a direct conflict with us. JD(U) chief and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has also made it clear that his party was opposed to the bill.The Assamese Community in London has joined in the ongoing opposition to the bill in the state, describing it as a threat to Assam's demography, culture and the Assamese language .

GUWAHATI: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) ministers and MLAs have stepped up pressure on ally BJP in the state to impress upon its national leadership not to pursue the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that proposes to make all non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh eligible for Indian citizenship.On Tuesday night, a delegation of the AGP Legislature Party (AGPLP) met chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and reiterated its strong opposition to the bill after BJP president Amit Shah announced in the recently held national executive of the party that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill would be implemented soon.AGP president and agriculture minister Atul Bora said, "Our stand on the bill is clear-we oppose it. We have been repeatedly saying this to our partner BJP. At the last NEDA meeting here, too, we made our stand loud and clear before Amit Shah. A delegation of the non-resident Assamese recently urged Indian High Commissioner to UK, YK Sinha, to convey their concern to Prime Minister Narendra Modi After the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which was tabled in the Parliament in 2016, it was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for review and to add additional points after consulting with various groups of individuals and organizations.
