Traffic restrictions in place for Durga Puja

GUWAHATI: The traffic police department has imposed several restrictions on all kinds of vehicles in the city for the convenience of Durga Puja pandal hoppers. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Amanjeet Kaur said, "Parking of vehicles will not be allowed up to 500 metres from the Puja pandals. Roadside parking shall be strictly prohibited on MG Road, B Baruah Road, GNB Road, Tayabullah Road and on the stretch of GS Road from Lachitnagar Point to Janata Hotel Point. "Parking on the side of the road will be allowed in other areas if it does not hamper traffic. All vehicles from Kamakhya railway station and Gotanagar area shall be allowed to move through Railway Gate No 3 and railway headquarters."

While all goods vehicles have been restricted from entering the city area from 1 pm to 4 pm, restrictions have been imposed on private and passenger vehicles in Dispur , Paltan Bazar, Panbazar, Jalukbari , Bharalumukh, Basistha , Chandmari and Geetanagar localities, all of which areas record high footfall during the Puja.A traffic police advisory said, "For highly crowded Maligaon area during Puja, there will be no entry from Maligaon Chariali to Pandu. There will be no entry of vehicles on PNGB Road between Maligaon Chariali and Kamakhya railway station level crossing. All vehicles from Kamakhya railway station and Gotanagar area shall be allowed to move through Railway Gate No 3 and railway headquarters." Routes of city buses and light passenger vehicles have also been diverted.Puja committees have been asked to provide volunteers to help with traffic arrangements. Restrictions have also been imposed on parking of private vehicles across the city. Both-side parking on any road and at or near intersections shall not be allowed. Traffic police has also issued regulations for the immersion of the idols on October 19.
