GUWAHATI: A teacher in lower Assam 's Darrang district was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly cooking beef inside the school kitchen meant to prepare midday meal for students.The accused, Nasiruddin Ahmed, is the head teacher of Dakhin Duliapara Lower Primary School in the minority-dominated Dalgaon area of the district. Based on an FIR lodged by the district elementary education officer (DEEO), Ahmed has been charged with trying to promote enmity between different groups on grounds of religion intended to outrage religious feelings.An order issued by Darrang DEEO J Tabassum said, "He has been put under suspension by the district elementary education office with immediate effect for violating school norms, as well as social ethics, willfully."Talking to TOI, Tabassum said, "After preliminary investigation, it has been found that beef was cooked on the school campus on Monday on the occasion of a management committee meeting. Such an act not only violated the school norms, it is also not socially healthy. There was no official permission for such a party and students were deprived of their midday meal. So, we had no other option left but to suspend him."Education department officials said police have been informed about the matter in written as it is a sensitive issue which could have sparked communal tension.The official suspension order issued by the DEEO stated that based on a community complaint, a preliminary departmental inquiry was initiated immediately wherein it was revealed that Ahmed had used objectionable food items on the school premises on Monday, depriving students of midday meal.
