Protesters plan show of strength against citizenship bill

"The 70 organizations will stage a Gana Satyagraha across the district headquarters of the state from November 17 to 27. But the BJP remains adamant to safeguard its Hindu vote bank by passing the bill. After the situation turned tense in the state after the Tinsukia killings, the two pro-talks Ulfa leaders were arrested for allegedly making inflammatory statements. GUWAHATI: The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS)-led coordination committee of 70 organizations has announced Sankalp Yatras to state capital Dispur in November, followed by a massive show of strength with a congregation of over one lakh protesters against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in December.After a marathon meeting of the leadership of the 70 organizations held at Sonapur, on the outskirts of the city on Saturday, KMSS adviser Akhil Gogoi said four Sankalp Yatras will start their march to Dispur from Sadiya, Dhubri, Jonai and Diphu on November 11, before converging at Dispur on November 16.Condemning the Tinsukia killing in strong words, the organizations demanded unconditional release of pro-talks Ulfa leaders Mrinal Hazarika and Jiten Dutta and demanded arrest of BJP legislator Shiladitya Dev for allegedly instigating communal tension at a time when the citizenship issue has kept the state on the boil. After the situation turned tense in the state after the Tinsukia killings, the two pro-talks Ulfa leaders were arrested for allegedly making inflammatory statements."November- December will remain a testimony to the unprecedented united movement against the Centre's move to grant citizenship to illegal migrants by passing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The Sankalp Yatras will commence from four junctions of the state with participation of indigenous people, irrespective of tribes and communities, who have been striving for protection of their identity in wake of the Centre's move to grant citizenship to migrants on religious lines. The confluence at Dispur will shake the state government and the legislators, who are bound to go with the people's wish," said Akhil.He added, "Time and again we have cautioned the government on how such a decision to pass the bill is going to prove devastating for the ethnic and tribal communities of the state. But the BJP remains adamant to safeguard its Hindu vote bank by passing the bill. There was no other alternative before us than announcing the resistance convention at Dispur on November 16."The 70 organizations will stage a Gana Satyagraha across the district headquarters of the state from November 17 to 27. Prior to intensifying the movement, the coordination committees of the joint movement will be finalized at the district-level by November 9, said the meeting's conveners.Akhil said the 70 organizations will organize a massive show of strength, with over one lakh people opposing the bill, during the first week of December if the Centre does not withdraw the bill. "We will organize the mass gathering to put utmost democratic pressure to withdraw the bill, which remains the greatest threat to the indigenous tribes and ethnic communities of Assam at present," he added.
