BJP seeks help to enforce Clause 6 of Assam Accord

A six-year-long agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants was launched by the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) in 1979. It will also suggest measures to be taken to protect Assamese and other indigenous languages of Assam. The committee will assess the appropriate level of reservation of seats in the Assam legislative assembly and local bodies for Assamese people. A Union cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently approved the setting up of the panel. The decision to grant ST status to six communities of Assam is another move in that direction which will permanently secure the interests of the indigenous people,” added Dutta.

DIBRUGARH: The BJP on Friday sought cooperation from all quarters to implement Clause 6 of the historic Assam Accord to provide constitutional, legislative and administrative protection to the indigenous people.Speaking to reporters here, state BJP spokesperson and media panelist Subhash Dutta said Clause 6 will protect the cultural, social and linguistic identity and heritage of the indigenous people of the state.The Centre has notified a high-level committee for the implementation of Clause 6. A Union cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently approved the setting up of the panel. The committee will assess the appropriate level of reservation of seats in the Assam legislative assembly and local bodies for Assamese people. It will also suggest measures to be taken to protect Assamese and other indigenous languages of Assam. The panel will submit its report within six months.“A panel has been set up that will hold discussions with various stakeholders, including social organisations, legal and constitutional experts, besides eminent persons from the field of art, culture, literature, conservation, economics, linguistics and sociology. We urge them to wholeheartedly extend their cooperation for smooth implementation of Clause 6,” said Dutta.The Assam Accord was a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed between representatives of the Government of India and the leaders of the Assam Movement in New Delhi on August 15, 1985.
