Sedition charges against 4 NE youths for pro-Pakistan posts on Facebook

The youth has been charged with ‘attempting to incite disaffection towards the government’ and allegedly showing disregard to Indian security forces. He has been sent on judicial remand.Police also booked Aminul Islam, an youth from Basugaon area of Chirang district, on Tuesday, for allegedly praising Pakistan’s army on Facebook. They located him in Mysore and Karnataka Police was roped in to bring the youth under a security scanner. Chirang Police said a suo motu case has been registered by police in this connection, slapping charges of criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity and trying to hurt religious feelings. Police, however, refused to register a case as he was found to be suffering from mental illness.

Guwahati/Agartala: Three youths from Assam and one youth hailing from Tripura have been booked under sedition for airing pro-Pakistan opinions on social media.Two youths were booked by police in lower Assam on Tuesday for allegedly carrying out pro-Pakistan campaigns in Darrang and Chirang districts respectively.Hafizur Rahman (19) alias Sunny has been arrested from ward number 2 in Mangaldoi town on sedition charges for allegedly posting derogatory posts against the state of India on Facebook. The youth has been charged with ‘attempting to incite disaffection towards the government’ and allegedly showing disregard to Indian security forces. Hafizur posted a cartoon where a Pakistani was shown hanging an Indian. He has been sent on judicial remand.Police also booked Aminul Islam, an youth from Basugaon area of Chirang district, on Tuesday, for allegedly praising Pakistan’s army on Facebook. Chirang Police said a suo motu case has been registered by police in this connection, slapping charges of criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity and trying to hurt religious feelings. “Aminul Islam, who identified himself as an ABMSU (All BTC Minority Students’ Union) member on Facebook, shared a post where Pak Army Zindabad was written,” said a senior police official.Ajmal Hussain, an youth from Sonitpur, was arrested by Tezpur Police on Tuesday for allegedly posting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ on Facebook.Another youth from Lakhimpur, Rahul Tanti, has been taken into police custody for allegedly posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on social networking sites. However, police are yet to confirm if Rahul has been charged with sedition.Meanwhile, a Tripura Police team left for Bengaluru on Tuesday to detain a youth hailing from Khowai and presently working in Mysore for allegedly posting ‘pro-Pakistan comments’ on social media. The youth has been booked for sedition.The youth reportedly wrote a post on the night of the Pulwama attack appreciating the terrorist attack orchestrated by the Jaish-e-Mohammad suicide bomber on a CRPF convoy, in which 40 personnel were martyred, and lamenting why such attacks do not take place in northeast India.“The youth has been booked for sedition and anti-national activities. His movements have been kept under watch by Karnataka Police for the last three days, with all apparatus put in place to prevent any bid to flee,” said a Tripura Police source.Police here registered a case of sedition against him on the night of the Pulwama attack itself. They located him in Mysore and Karnataka Police was roped in to bring the youth under a security scanner. “He has been found to be working at a private concern in Mysore. He has not been detained yet,” said the police source.Meanwhile, police have registered a case against a madrassa, Jamia Islamia Jalalia, at Hojai police station in the central Assam district, after a section of students of the madrassa allegedly shouted pro-Pakistan slogans in a rally taken out in the town on Monday. Based on FIRs filed by the local units of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), police have registered a case against the institution and has started a probe.“Though the rally was said to be taken out against the Pulwama attack, the organizations which have filed the FIRs last night have alleged that ‘Pakistan zindabad’ slogans were raised in the rally taken out under the aegis of Jamia Islamia Jalalia,” said officer in-charge of Hojai police station, Khiteswar Bania. He added that a video footage of the rally is being investigated by police.In yet another incident, locals thrashed a mentally disturbed boy in the Kamakhya temple premises for shouting slogans glorifying Pakistan . Police, however, refused to register a case as he was found to be suffering from mental illness.
