Pockets of Barak Valley issue LS poll boycott call

Silchar: A number of gram panchayat members and people of Silchar and Karimganj (SC) Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam’s Barak Valley have decided to boycott the upcoming Lok Sabha election, alleging failure of the incumbent lawmakers to fulfil their promises.Residents of ward numbers 4, 5 and 6 of Lala Municipal Board in Hailakandi district said they will boycott the election in protest against neglect towards them by the government and public representatives, including Karimganj MP Radheshyam Biswas. They alleged that in the absence of necessary funds, development work has taken a beating.Again, nearly 3,000 residents of Binodini GP in south Karimganj locality have also decided to skip the polls in protest against local MP Radheshyam Biswas’s failure to fulfill his promise to build an RCC bridge over Gulcherra river. They alleged that since Independence, people of this locality in the border district of Karimganj have been using a bamboo bridge.On the other hand, Barak Cha Shramik Union (BCSU) assistant general secretary Dinanath Baroi on Sunday said the tea workers of the Valley will decide their next course of agitation after April 1 — the day when the management of tea gardens have promised to pay Rs 145 daily wages to workers instead of the existing Rs 130.
