Kochpara In Dharapur To Mazirgaon Under Threat Due To Fragile Embankment

The area from Kochpara in Dharapur to Mazirgaon under West Guwahati Assembly Constituency is under serious threat with the worsening condition of the embankment. A huge wave of Brahmaputra current broke the embankment of the Rajapara area in Mazirgaon on Tuesday and the part is completely flooded. If more of the embankment breaks off, various villages in the area will be completely submerged in river water. As such, the repair work of the embankment needs to be started on an urgent basis to prevent future crisis. A team of Rani Chapori Monasha Mandir managing committee surveyed the area from Kochpara in Dharapur to Mazirgaon under West Guwahati Assembly Constituency.

STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: As the flood situation in the State deteriorates, more and more people are suffering from the disasters brought on by the swelling Brahmaputra waters. The river is running way above the danger level and has brought on uncountable loss of man and animal life as well as property and agricultural land. The area from Kochpara in Dharapur to Mazirgaon under West Guwahati Assembly Constituency is under serious threat with the worsening condition of the embankment. As the water force increases, the embankments, already in a fragile state are worsening by the hour and might completely break off at any moment. A huge wave of Brahmaputra current broke the embankment of the Rajapara area in Mazirgaon on Tuesday and the part is completely flooded. The residents of the area are under crisis as the river water has jostled the regular life of the people as they take safety measures to protect life and property. If more of the embankment breaks off, various villages in the area will be completely submerged in river water. And if it crosses the Old AT Road, the runway of LGBI airport will also get flooded and will halt air services. As such, the repair work of the embankment needs to be started on an urgent basis to prevent future crisis. A team of Rani Chapori Monasha Mandir managing committee surveyed the area from Kochpara in Dharapur to Mazirgaon under West Guwahati Assembly Constituency. A team delegate Akhil Baishya said, “If the fragile embankment is not repaired soon, the areas of Mazirgaon, Kendukuchi, Garal, Bhattapara, Kuhabari and various others will be drowned in Brahmaputra waters. And if these areas get flooded, then the LGBI airport will also be inundated with water.” Local MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita along with Water Resource Department East Guwahati Subdivisions Subdivisional Engineer surveyed the whole area to determine the existing and probable flood situation.
