Guwahati: NEDA Convener Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the sidelines of Northeast Democratic Alliance's (NEDA) 4th conclave assured all the Chief Ministers of the Northeast that proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 will have a cutoff date of 31st December 2014. CM Sangma also enquired if the proposed CAB will override Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. To which, Union Home Minister informed that specific provisions would be included in the proposed Amendment Bill itself. All the current laws and regulations and state laws enacted for protecting the cultural, linguistics and other rights of Northeastern region will not get diluted by the proposed CAB, says Amit Shah. Guwahati: NEDA Convener Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the sidelines of Northeast Democratic Alliances (NEDA) 4th conclave assured all the Chief Ministers of the Northeast that proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 will have a cutoff date of 31st December 2014. Sarma also informed that the Union Minister had assured that the proposed CAB will not, in any way, override the provisions of the 6th Schedule, Inner Line Permit and State acts like Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. It is to be noted that earlier, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma enquired whether there will be any cut off date for granting Citizenship to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Christians population of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. CM Sangma also enquired if the proposed CAB will override Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. CMs of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland enquired whether the CAB will in any way affect provisions of Article 371, 6th Schedule of the constitution of India and Inner Line Permit System. To which, Union Home Minister informed that specific provisions would be included in the proposed Amendment Bill itself. All the current laws and regulations and state laws enacted for protecting the cultural, linguistics and other rights of Northeastern region will not get diluted by the proposed CAB, says Amit Shah. Meanwhile, all the CMs of the region thanked Union Home Minister for his categorical assurance and assured him that they will discuss the proposed CAB with all the stakeholders in their respective states and meet the Union Home Minister soon again.
