Staff Reporter GUWAHATI: Guwahati Traffic Police (GTP) collected over Rs 4.60-crore on the spot fines for traffic violations in 2019, apart from fines collected for non-FIR cases that are paid at the court. The charging of fines for traffic violation has been on the rise in Assam. The year 2019 witnessed as many as 240 fatal cases involving the killing of 249 people. There were as many as 691 non-fatal accidents during the year, leading to the injury of 836 people. In 2020 GTP seems to have adopted many new traffic rules so as to curb accidents in the metropolitan city. It has been keeping a close watch on city buses plying in the city as they are infamous for violating traffic rules and routes which they have been allowed to operate. An innovative arrangement adopted at ABC Traffic Point on the GS Road seems to have eased traffic congestion to a large extent. Since traffic points like the one at ABC on GS Road have the provision for vehicles to take U-turns from either direction of the of the road, more often than not, some vehicles get stuck in the space where a vehicle forms a U while turning back. However, of late it is seen that GTP has placed a few red cones in the very space where a vehicle is likely for the U, thereby compelling the vehicles that go straight to opt the left side of the vehicle that is taking a turn at the traffic point. A few top traffic police officers say that this is the beginning, and that they are going to take more such innovative measures to ease traffic congestion. “Were also accepting valuable suggestions from the public as well,” a traffic police officer said.
