STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: “The Congress will be the kingmaker in the upcoming BTC (Bodoland Territorial Council) elections”, said APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) on Friday. APCC general secretary and party convenor of BTC election, Durga Das Bodo said that the party will decide on February 26 whether it will contest the elections alone or with alliance. Talking to the Sentinel, the leader said that the Congress will contest elections with full swing and at the moment the party is having talks with three local parties about the possibilities of forming an alliance. He accepted that the party went through a tough phase in the BTC in the past but asserted that the position of the party has improved in the recent times. “The Congress was in power in Dispur for 15 years, and the BPF was its ally for 12 years. We gave full importance to BPF during our tenure but similar interest was not given by the latter during their BTC regime. For this reason, Congress supporters in the BTAD left the party and only the officer bearers and workers were associated with it. The party went completely inactive in the region. But, in the last six months, APCC has taken steps for revival of the party in the BTAD region. Full-fledged committee of the party has been formed in 35 constituencies out of 40 constituencies in the region”. Taking a jibe at the BJP, Bodo said that the differences of the BJP and the BPF (Bodoland Peoples Front) were bound to happen. “Not only in BTC, the BJP has tried to suppress it alliances wherever it has formed government. This has already happened in Assam; three ethinic political parties have lost their identities and same thing is going to happen with the BPF. Congress has been closely observing the political scenario in the”, the leader added.
