Assam is doing clinical trial of Covid-19 treatment with combination of two drugs, baricitinib and remdesivir which will reduce the  recovery time among patients. While number of positive cases are starting to take more time than before to double but there is an increase in number of severe cases.

Himanta Biswa Sarma health minister said, “Currently, there are no approved therapies for the treatment of Covid-19, only clinical trials. We are also having clinical trial of a combination baricitinib and remdesivir at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, which is provides a reduction in time to recovery of hospitalized patients.”

Sarma said that over 1000 patients have so far received remdesivir and over 1880 have got plasma therapy. “We have seen that plasma therapy is working when administered during the early stage,” he added.

“Number of cases in September so far is less than number of cases recorded in August. But there is an increase in severity of cases. If the current trend continues, we expect the death rate to reduce substantially by October. At the moment our mortality rate is the lowest in the country .An average 2,004 coronavirus positive cases are being daily reported in Assam and it has not increased much in comparison to August though the number of deaths has risen, minister quoted.

The health department, which hadconducted more than 30 lakhs tests so far, is planning to conduct one lakh tests daily for three days beginning on September 28, Sarma said.
