The operation of electric engines up to Guwahati is a long-standing demand of the people of Northeast India and it is closer to reality now than ever. Passenger trains with electric locomotives are running from Katihar New Jalpaiguri and New Cooch Behar.

North Frontier Railways has made a significant achievement in providing a pollution-free green mode of transport as electrification of 334 km of track has been completed during the financial year 2020-21, despite the Covid-19 epidemic, railway electrification work in various sections of the North Frontier Railway was being done rapidly. Shubhanan Chandra, Chief Public Relations Officer of NF Railway informed that 100% electrification was approved in the budget of 2017-18.

A budgetary provision of 2542.62 crores was made at that time when the much-awaited electrification scheme reached New Jalpaiguri in 2019. After this, electrification was also completed in New Jalpaiguri - New Cooch Behar section last year, as a result, now the operation of passenger trains through electric engines has also started.

Inspection and speed testing cum current collection test for 334 route km completed in 2020-21 has also been successfully completed. Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) of NF Railway, Mo. Latif Khan inspected the newly electrified Rangia-Kamakhya section on March 30 and the New Coochbehar-Shrirampur section on March 31, a total of 99 route km. Earlier the portion from New Bongaigaon to Rangiya was also inspected.

The operation of electric engines up to the Guwahati is a long-standing demand of the people of Northeast India and it seems to be closer to reality now than ever. Without the approval of CRS, passenger trains cannot be operated through electric locomotives. Electrification of Guwahati is expected to be completed in the next few months. All the entire tracks will be electrified in the Northeast by the end of the year 2023

With the introduction of electric trains, the connectivity of the rest of India with the Northeast region will be better. This will also significantly improve the environment. Fossil fuels are used in popular engines to generate energy, which causes pollution.
