Some good news for those who love birds. Hyderabad is going to have its own vulture rescue centre. The Environment and Forest Ministry have decided to put in place another Action Plan for Vulture Conservation 2020-25.

The government has decided to set up four vulture rescue centres alongside the existing vulture conservation breeding centres, according to a Telangana Today report. These would be established near VCBCs of the city, Pinjore in Haryana, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Rani in Assam.

The population of three resident species of vultures fell by more than 90% during the mid-90s. More than 99% of these species were extinct by 2007. The central government has decided to take up the APVC 2020-25. A large number of vultures could be saved if there is a rescue centre to take care of the rescued birds, according to the APVC document.

The centres would function as shelters as a number of the vultures might not be in a position to fly again after recovery but can breed in conservation breeding areas and contribute to the upcoming generations. The unreleased birds could be utilised for testing of different medicines and educational purposes.

In the city, the vulture conservation breeding facility would be set up at the Nehru Zoological Park with an estimated budget of Rs 15 crore. The Park has 11 oriental white-backed vultures and most of them are 35-year-olds. In 2021-22, they would have to construct two colonies, hospital and holding aviaries and other infrastructure as per the guidance of CZA manual on vulture conservation.

In 2022-23, 30 pairs of Oriental White Backed Vultures have to be obtained from other centres and house them in two colony aviaries, 15 pairs in each. Veterinary Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are known to poison the principal food of vultures, cattle carcasses and the centre plans to regulate the sale of these drugs.
