Police crack down on fasting cab drivers

The indefinite hunger strike being undertaken by the protesting cab drivers was disrupted by the police at Dharna Chowk on Wednesday night. The drivers have accused Uber and Ola of going back on promises related to revenues leading to very less earnings. Shiva Vulkundakar, president, Telangana Cabs Drivers Association who is on indefinite fast continued the protest in police custody. The drivers want a uniform model of payment and incentives over a longer period instead of the existing dynamic one. The protestors said that they will continue to keep off roads as neither Ola nor Uber managements have contacted them for negotiations.

More than 100 drivers who were present at the venue were detained by the police and taken to various police stations while the rest was forced to disperse. Shiva Vulkundakar, president, Telangana Cabs Drivers Association who is on indefinite fast continued the protest in police custody. Suresh, vice president of the Association, said that the police used unnecessary force on them and denied permission to hold protests for the next day. “Around 2,500 drivers were protesting peacefully. Though many more wanted to join we asked them not to, because the venue was small and we did not want to cause inconvenience to the public. But the police did not allow us to hold a rally in the morning from Gun Park to Dharna Chowk. In the night, they just descended and bundled scores of our drivers into vans. We are in the dark about the whereabouts of our members,” he said. The protestors said that they will continue to keep off roads as neither Ola nor Uber managements have contacted them for negotiations. According to them, they are ready to carry on the protests till at least the government intervenes and accepts their demands. The drivers have accused Uber and Ola of going back on promises related to revenues leading to very less earnings. The drivers want a uniform model of payment and incentives over a longer period instead of the existing dynamic one. The protestors have also asked the government to intervene and allow them to use meters in case the taxi-hailing app managements do not agree to the drivers’ demands.
