Jalandhar, January 10 Under the state government’s campaign against tobacco consumption, street plays were staged at Jalokhana and Government High School Dhaliwal in Kapurthala today. The objective of the plays was to make the masses aware of tobacco consumption’s ill-effects. Civil Surgeon Dr Ramesh Kumari Banga said tobacco consumption was harmful for health and it was a need to make people made aware of its harmful effects. She said, “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the generation heading towards tobacco consumption and cigarette smoking is bought back on the right path.” On the occasion, a message was spread that tobacco consumption brings darkness to the lives of people. District Health Officer Dr Kuljit Singh said tobacco consumption caused the cancer of mouth and lungs. He added that tobacco also became the reason for the diseases of heart, gangrene and other fatal diseases. Dr Kuljit, while speaking about passive smoking, said smoke due to tobacco consumption caused adverse affects. He said if a pregnant woman is affected by passive smoking, it could even cause a miscarriage and disability in her yet-to-be-born child. He also spread awareness about the COPTA Act saying that smoking in public places is a crime. He appealed to people present at Jalokhana that they should quit tobacco so that a constructive society could be created. The head mistress of Government High School Dhaliwal Dona, Avinash Kaur, thanked officials of the Health Department. Mass media officer Paramjit Kaur, deputy mass media officer Shashi Bala and Ashwini Pinki were present on the occasion.
