Youth parliament aims to strengthen democracy

Tribune News ServiceJalandhar, April 3DAV College under the aegis of the Department of Political Science organised the 14th National Youth Parliament at the national level on Tuesday. It was sponsored by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India, under the scheme of the National Youth Parliament Competition in universities and colleges throughout the country. Principal SK Arora, while highlighting the importance of Youth Parliament, said the aim of the contest was to strengthen the roots of democracy, inculcate healthy habits of discipline and enable the student community to understand the working of our parliamentary institutions. In the event, 60 students participated and they successfully tried to create the look of the real Parliament. The roles of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Secretary General, etc, were played by the students very efficiently.

The coordinator of the programme, Dr Dinesh Arora, said the group-level competition was held on September 9 last year and the college won that competition and qualified for the national level. In the event, 60 students participated and they successfully tried to create the look of the real Parliament. The seating arrangement was made as per the provisions of the Parliament. The roles of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Secretary General, etc, were played by the students very efficiently. The issues of demonetisation, price rise, unemployment, china’s anti-India policies, Indian money in foreign banks, adulterated food, etc, were the hot issues of the debate and discussion in the House.
