JAMSHEDPUR: Dashrath Gagrai, JMM's MLA from Kharsawan assembly constituency, on Thursday wrote to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking its intervention to prevent the state home department's decision to release one Dhirender alias Pappu, who is serving life term for the murder of former JMM president Nirmal Mahato.In his letter faxed to the CBI director Alok Verma, Gagrai sought the investigating agency's immediate intervention to stop the release of Dhirendra, who is lodged in Gaghidih central jail."CBI played an important role not just in cracking the case and nabbing the killers of Nirmal da but it also worked hard to bring justice. I have appealed to the CBI to intervene and make sure its effort doesn't go waste with the release of the killer," the MLA said.Gargai said Mahato was one of the tallest and admired leaders of the state who sacrificed his life fighting for the separate statehood of Jharkhand and the decision of the government to release his killer by commuting his sentence has hurt sentiments of thousands of people of the state."The government should not be seen as an institution which sides with criminals as this would send wrong signal to people who have trusted the legal system," the MLA said, adding that he has written the letter after learning from press reports about the government's move to free the culprit.The firebrand JMM leader was shot dead at the Chamaria guest house in Bistupur police station area in broad daylight on August 8, 1987. The court of additional district judge A K Gupta had sentenced Singh to rigorous life imprisonment in July 2004 under Section 302 of IPC.Incidentally, several outfits in Kolhan have organized protests on the issue in the last two days.
