Funds crunch hits Tatanagar cow shelter

JAMSHEDPUR: Members of the Tatanagar gaushala, a leading cow-shelter under the Kolhan division , on Monday said they are in dire need of funds to run their day-to-day affairs and are demanding to set up a Gau Seva Ayog. "We don't make a profit selling the milk either," a volunteer at the gaushala situated in Jugsalai said.Officials of Jharkhand Pradeshik Gaushala Sangh (JPGS), a state-wide body said the state government has assured to increase fund support for upkeep of stray cows but nothing has been materialised so far. He also announced to increase the monetary support to meet the expenditure cost of the stray cows but notification is yet to be issued," Anil Modi, JPGS general secretary, said.Tatanagar gaushala on the other hand demanded all political parties to come forward with a responses to their long pending demands.

With campaigns for the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat set to commence soon ahead of the elections, the Tatanagar gaushala has now demanded from all political parties to come forward to explain their position towards in respect to their long pending demand.With nearly 2,000 cows at the shelter, the organization is facing a massive shortage of funds for the proper upkeep of the animals besides meeting the monthly establishment cost that include employees wages and food expenditure of the bovine."The gaushala is maintained by the voluntary fund support from cow lovers," Mahesh Goyal, a functionary of Tatanagar Gaushala, said. "Annually, the government gives Rs 50 for the upkeep of every stray cow brought here from different parts (of Kolhan) but in the past two years there's no fund support from the government," he added.He said the sourcing funds from the government is not easy, hence, the gaushala is almost dependent totally on individual contributions.Notably, out of 2,000 cows, 1,700 are stray ones brought to the gaushala in the past few years while the remaining 300 cows are milking cows.
