West Bengal panchayat polls: Calcutta High Court orders fresh dates for nomination

Calcutta High Court, on Friday, has ordered the State Election Commission (SEC) to announce fresh dates for filing of nomination for Bengal Panchayat poll. Trinamool Congress claimed that the High Court has accepted their arguments and demands. Following the order, SEC will have to announce new dates for rural polls, which was earlier scheduled in the first week of May. The panchayat elections in West Bengal were to be held in three phases from May 1 to May 5 and the counting of votes was scheduled on May 8. About 5.08 Crore electors or 74 per cent of the electors will vote in the rural poll.

The Court cancelled the notification of the SEC where it had quashed its earlier order of extending the nomination process by one day on April 10 and directed the Commission to issue fresh date of filing of nomination papers The High Court had last week issued a stay on filing of nomination, following allegations of large scale violence by the Opposition parties. Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI(M)) leaders Rabin Deb said that they are “happy” with the order. Trinamool Congress claimed that the High Court has accepted their arguments and demands. The panchayat elections in West Bengal were to be held in three phases from May 1 to May 5 and the counting of votes was scheduled on May 8. However, SEC will have to announce a new schedule, following Friday's order. About 5.08 Crore electors or 74 per cent of the electors will vote in the rural poll.
