KOLKATA: The city continued to reel under scorching heat for the second consecutive day with the maximum temperature reaching 39.7°C on Saturday. It was the second hottest day of the year. Kolkata had recorded 40°C on Friday. With warm westerly winds blowing in from north India and no sign of the revival of monsoon current yet, Kolkata had a gruelling start to the weekend. It could remain just as warm and uncomfortable on Sunday, predicted the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).But some respite could be round the corner, said weatherman. The westerly winds are slowing down and that could bring the mercury down by a degree on Monday. The monsoon currents, however, remain stalled and there is yet no sign of the rains staging a comeback.“Unless the monsoon currents start moving, Kolkata and south Bengal will continue to be singed by this monsoon heat. It rarely happens that the temperature reaches the 40°C mark after the onset of monsoon. But this year, monsoon has come to a halt immediately after hitting south Bengal. The rest of east India, including Bihar and Jharkhand, are yet to receive monsoon,” said RMC director GK Das.Even though humidity has been moderately low, it has been occasionally shooting up. But it is the dry westerly winds that have left the city scorched. “It seems we will have to wait till at least the middle of next week for rain. Not only are the monsoon currents not moving, there is no sign of any rain-triggering system either,” said Das.
