Max temp falls, min turns on discomfort

The minimum temperature, however, was four notches above the normal mark at 30.4 degrees Celsius. But heat count in the past one week has broken this record where the mean minimum temperature for seven days has touched 28.2 degrees Celsius. This ultimately will drag the mercury down, pulling down the heat tally and bringing the mean temperature back to the normal mark. Met office expects similar kind of weather to prevail till the monsoon rain lashes the city again. At 34.8 degrees — one degree above the normal mark — it plunged almost five degrees from that of Saturday.

KOLKATA: Even as light showers in some pockets and a cloud cover prevented the mercury from shooting up further during the day time, the rising temperature at night made it extremely uncomfortable for Kolkatans. In fact, the maximum temperature on Sunday climbed down on the Celsius scale. At 34.8 degrees — one degree above the normal mark — it plunged almost five degrees from that of Saturday. The minimum temperature, however, was four notches above the normal mark at 30.4 degrees Celsius. Met office expects similar kind of weather to prevail till the monsoon rain lashes the city again. For now, the chances of rain are less as the monsoon flow is weak.“There is not much chance of widespread rain for now as the monsoon flow is very weak. As a result there will be discomfort during both day and night,” said Sanjib Bandyopadhyay, deputy director general of meteorology at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata.According to record maintained by IMD (Indian Meteorological Department), the mean minimum temperature for June is 26.8 degrees Celsius. But heat count in the past one week has broken this record where the mean minimum temperature for seven days has touched 28.2 degrees Celsius. The actual mean maximum temperature for June at 36.8 degrees Celsius too has surpassed the normal mark of 33.8 degrees Celsius. The weathermen, however, are hopeful about more rainy days in the later part of June once the monsoon current resurges. This ultimately will drag the mercury down, pulling down the heat tally and bringing the mean temperature back to the normal mark. Currently, a trough line extending from northeast Bihar to West Central Bay of Bengal is infusing abundant moisture into the Gangetic West Bengal . This line at a height of 7.6km is expected to inject more moisture from the sea in the coming days to push up cloud formation. Though it will trigger light rain in coastal region, the clouds will not be potent enough to trigger widespread rain. The cloud cover, which raised hope for rain on Sunday, fizzled out soon. Only a few pockets in the city witnessed light rain or drizzles.
