KOLKATA: Don't have enough cash to pay traffic fines on the spot? Don't fret, you can now pay traffic fines with a swipe of your credit or debit card.The Bidhannagar police on Monday started a week-long trial for the new system of spot payment using card swipe machines. Currently, traffic fines can be paid online, using cards, off-line in designated bank branches and in some cases through payment service providers.Traffic sergeants will carry a point-of-sale (POS) or electronic data capturing machine for the purpose. Once a card is swiped, the machine will print two receipts-one for the traffic cop, the other for the person paying the fine.The receipt will carry the challan number, list the traffic violations, the vehicle details, the fine amount and a transaction ID."The spot fine using a POS machine is a part of the Integrated Traffic Management System. The machine generates receipt for the fine. This information is then fed to the central data base. The offender receives intimation of challan, along with the fine paid, both on his cell-phone and e-mail ID," said Amit Javalgi, DCP (Headquarters)."All modes of payment will be linked to the server. The ongoing trials will provide crucial data-and feedback-to make the process glitch free," Javalgi told TOI.Kolkata traffic police will introduce a similar mode of payment by this year end. We are examining several proposals in this regard, a senior police officer said.
