Why break the rule in order of accommodate a political person,” rued another agitating student. The college authority is likely to call for a college council meeting next week to solve the stalemate. KOLKATA: The impasse at Medical College and Hospital Calcutta continues with the agitating students refusing to back out.The students have been protesting for the past seven days, six of them being on fast since Tuesday intensifying their demand for hostel allotment through transparent counseling. An attempt to break the ice on Wednesday by the college authority failed as the students refused to end the protest unless the principal calls for a college council meeting.“We have been living in a hostel whose ceiling comes falling down on and off. The students argued that while the MBBS students have to sign an anti-ragging bond, post-graduate students who do not have to sign such bond, have been accommodated the hostel. The students are also against the appointment of an MBBS doctor as the superintendent of the new hostel.“All along the hostels have been under the supervision of senior faculty members. A final student had to be hospitalised after a portion of the ceiling fell on him,” said Sayanatan Mukhuty, an agitating student.Dr UK Bhadra, the college principal, held a meeting with student representatives in appealing them to end the strike.“We will not give up our fight till our demands are met,” said Suman Mondal, an MBBS final year student. The students said a newly-built 11-storey hostel building can accommodate at least 650 students. But the hospital authority last week came out with a circular saying that this hostel will accommodate only new students, citing MCI rules to keep new students away from old students.“The MCI rule does not specify new students to be kept in a separate hostel but in a block or in a separate floor under the supervision of a warden,” said Mondal.Amidst their protest the college administration on Tuesday allocated a portion of the hostel to post-graduate students.
