KOLKATA: A traffic constable from the Madhyamgram police station was on Sunday night run over by a speeding bike he was trying to stop as the motorcyclist was racing another two-wheeler. The accused managed to speed away and is yet to be traced. The incident took place around 10.30pm on Jessore Road near Madhyamgram BT College, where constable Allauddin Mondal (50) was deployed.“Mondal was manning New Barrackpore More near BT College. When he found two motorbikes racing each other at a break-neck speed, he raised his hand to stop the two. Instead of slowing down, the first motorcyclist whizzed past him, while the second one rode straight into him, knocked him down and sped away,” the police said. In the impact, Mondal was flung into the air and hurled onto the ground. Immediately, he started bleeding profusely. “He had dislocated his collar bone and suffered multiple fractures on his waist and legs besides sustaining bleeding injuries on his head,” a senior police officer at the Madhyamgram police station said. Mondal’s colleagues took him to Madhyamgram Gramin Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.A resident of Amdanga, Mondal had been trained at West Bengal National Voluntary Force’s Halisahar centre in 1996. He was later posted as a border-wing home guard at several police stations, such as Barasat, Gaighata and Swarupnagar. He became a traffic constable at the Madhyamgram police station a couple of years ago. His colleagues at the police station could not believe he was killed in such a way. “He was very hardworking and diligent. We are shocked tp have lost him. He dared to stop a rogue biker even at the cost of his life,” a senior district police officer said. The police have started checking the footages of the CCTV cameras installed near the accident spot. “Mondal had signalled the biker to stop. But we suspect the rogue biker didn’t stop and hit him head-on. A raid is on to nab the accused biker. The drive will be stepped up along Jessore Road,” said Tamal Das, officer in charge of Madhyamgram police station.
