KOLKATA: A veteran right-back footballer, who had represented all three major city clubs before a leg injury, which ended his career in 2007, was arrested for allegedly working as a middleman in bringing huge consignments of ganja from Silchar to Hooghly.The accused, Amjad Ali Khan , had played for a year with East Bengal in 2002, represented Mohun Bagan for three months in 2003 before playing regularly for Mohammedan Sporting Club from 2004 to 2007. He was arrested from his Topsia home early on Wednesday.Khan's name came up after the Special Task Force of Kolkata Police, along with the narcotics section of Detective Department, stopped a truck near Dock No. 12 in Kidderpore on Tuesday night."We had a tip-off about a large consignment of illegal drugs reaching the city. So, we stopped the truck, seized around 550kg of ganja packed in 45 packets and arrested the driver and helper. The market value of the product is around Rs 40 lakhs," said a police officer.The driver, Harpreet Singh and helper Balvinder Singh, gave up the names of footballer Khan and Amit Roy, another receiver Hooghly. "We raided Khan's Tiljala home and picked him up in the early hours of Wednesday. He told us that he has been in this business for the last two years," said the officer.
