KOLKATA: Presidency University has decided to hand over the degree certificates to the 750 pass-outs who did not receive them on the day of convocation on September 11. The curtailed convocation programme was held at Nandan 3 following students’ agitation on the campus. Monday’s decision came after a go-ahead from chancellor Keshari Nath Tripathi and the state government.“After completing all formalities and appraising the competent authorities, the vice-chancellor has directed the controller of examinations to distribute the degree certificates to the students at the earliest,” said registrar Debajyoti Konar. “The controller is going to hold a meeting with the heads of the departments and departmental degree coordinators regarding the detailed schedule and method of distribution. The details will be published on the university website by Tuesday,” he added. On Friday VC Anuradha Lohia met the chancellor and discussed with him the prospect of disbursing the certificates as many students had turned up on September 11on the campus, hoping to attend the convocation. Some of them had even come from outside the state. Sources in Raj Bhavan said the governor had sought time to study the statute of the university in details. “Some students had also appealed to Tripathi seeking an appointment,” added the source.A higher education department official said though some students demanded a second convocation, there’s no such possibility. “At Tuesday’s meeting, the modalities and mechanisms of distributing the degrees will be finalized. It is likely that they will be handed over or dispatched to the students within the next week,” the official said.
